Your Guide To New Edinburgh-Lindenlea  | Sylvain Bourgon

| Living in Ottawa

New Edinburgh-Lindenlea is a majestic area marked by Queen Anne revival architecture and mature trees. It’s also home to many prominent buildings, including the residences of the governor general and the prime minister. But this region isn’t just full of history. It’s also an incredibly vibrant place to live. If you’re considering moving to the area, here’s everything you need to know:

Location

New Edinburgh is situated southeast of Ottawa’s downtown core. It’s bordered by two bodies of water—the Rideau River to the west and the Ottawa River to the north. Lindenlea sits to the east of New Edinburgh, but the two areas are generally viewed as one neighbourhood.

Restaurants & Cafes

New Edinburgh-Lindenlea is home to some of Ottawa’s hippest restaurants and coffee shops. On Springfield Rd, check out the Fraser Cafe, a modern bistro that serves globally-inspired dishes. If you’re looking for coffee or some lighter fare, try Red Door Provisions (a local favourite) or Union Street Kitchen Café (which has an attached yoga studio that’s run by its owners). The neighbourhood even has its own location of the Clocktower, Ottawa’s favourite brewpub.

Entertainment & Fun

The New Edinburgh Community & Arts Centre (NECTAR) offers a range of classes for residents of all ages. From community art exhibitions to preschool programs to meditation classes, this centre  is truly a community hub. Another central gathering place is McKay United Church—fitness, art, and music classes are all run out of this beautiful 142 year-old building.

For green-space lovers, there are two major parks in the area. Both New Edinburgh and Stanley Park offer off-leash dog areas. The latter is also newly renovated with plenty of play space for kids.

Community Events

A growing list of local events strengthens the sense of community in New Edinburgh-Lindenlea. The area hosts Ottawa’s magical Lumiere Festival, where attendees are encouraged to put on whimsical costumes and marvel at handmade lanterns blazing in trees.

If handcrafted items are your thing, you’ll love the Something New Edinburgh Craft Show, where local artisans showcase their creations. And then there’s the New Edinburgh Garage Sale. Ottawans love a good garage sale, and this one allows neighbourhood residents to support a good cause (the Crichton Community Council).

Transit Options

The area is primarily served by the #9 bus, which makes a convenient stop at Crichton and Beechwood. Highways 44 and 93 are both easy to get to from anywhere in the region, and the drives to both Byward Market and Hull (Quebec) take less than ten minutes.

Real Estate Stats

The average price for a single-family home in New Edinburgh-Lindenlea sits at $767,200. It’s true that this number is high by Ottawa standards, but it can be explained by the neighbourhood’s central location and it’s charming older houses. Prices in New Edinburgh-Lindenlea are also lower than what you’ll find in some of the city’s other affluent areas, like Westboro or Rockcliffe Park.
