Winterlude Ottawa 2019 is around the corner. Here’s everything you need to know.
Winterlude is one of the most popular winter events in Canada. Every year for three weeks Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec host a series of celebrations for the whole family to enjoy. Winterlude is run by the Department of Canadian Heritage and began in 1979. This special winter festival attracts thousands of people from different parts of the country and even the world to enjoy ice sculptures, skating, snow playgrounds and more.
This year, Winterlude will be held from February 1 to February 18, 2019 and will take place, as usual, across several locations in Ottawa and Gatineau at the same time. Most Winterlude events are free and there is even free transportation provided by OC Transpo and the Société de transport de l’Outaouais.
Rediscovering the joys of winter at Winterlude:
Skating on the Rideau Canal is one of the most popular Winterlude activities to warm up a cold day. As Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal runs 7.8 km from downtown Ottawa to Dows Lake and is the largest naturally frozen skating rink in the world. The Rideau Canal has rental skates as well as plenty of rest stops for Beavertails and other classically Canadian treats.
Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques-Cartier Park, Gatineau boasts a free children’s snow playground with giant snow slides surrounded by beautifully crafted snow sculptures. With plenty of entertainment for children, Snowflake Kingdom has always been a great place for the whole family to remember how fun winter really is.
The 5th annual Ottawa Winter Brewfest is a great Winterlude experience where grownups can taste over 100 craft beers from Ontario and Quebec. Brewfest is held at Landsdowne Park Ottawa, and runs from February 15 to February 16, 2019. The event will feature a bonfire, gourmet dishes and dancing to local DJs. Tickets can be purchased online with a presale valid until December 31, 2018.
